FORTIFIED Roof is a nationally recognized roofing standard that is above and beyond the basic building codes. It’s essentially an upgrade to your standard roofing. It follows a set of stricter guidelines from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) so your roof’s tougher and more resistant to Lowcountry weather.
Every FORTIFIED Roof installation includes three core upgrades.
The seams of your roof deck are sealed to prevent water from bursting in if the roof coverings get lost in the chaos of a storm. Without this protection, even just an inch of rain hammering an exposed deck can let in a lot of water damage inside your home.
Standard roofing nails are smooth, which means they can (and will) work loose over time, especially in the face of severe storms. FORTIFIED requires ring-shank nails. These have ridges along the shaft that grip the wood a lot more firmly. That means your roof is much harder to pull apart during the high winds from a hurricane.
Wind typically finds its way in at the edges of the roof first. FORTIFIED deals with this with a wider drip edge and a starter strip that’s fully sealed down. That means there’s no loose edge for wind to catch and lift.
The coastal climate here in South Carolina puts roofs everywhere through their paces year after year, and the FORTIFIED standard came about with those exact stormy conditions in mind.
But beyond just storm protection, a lot of South Carolina homeowners who upgrade to a FORTIFIED Roof can also qualify for insurance premium discounts. Be sure to ask your insurer about potential savings when the Restoration Roofing crew installs a FORTIFIED roof for you.
